We Smokies are busy making plans for the next couple of months. As well as our joint gig with Bristol-based a cappella group Original Sing on Saturday 15 November, we have now set a date for our Christmas gig: Friday 28 November (keep it free and watch this space)! We’ve been working on lots of exciting new arrangements and can’t wait to share them with you.
As well as looking forward, though, we like to reminisce from time to time. So, to keep you ticking over, here’s another video from our Greenwood gig back in July: Michael’s arrangement of Rihanna’s Russian Roulette. Enjoy!
As we pick up rehearsals again after our summer break, our new Musical Director Michael shares his a-ca-vision for the year.
Yes, it’s that time of year again. As a teacher for the past nine years*, and a university student and school pupil for the 16 immediately before that, September is engrained as the time of new beginnings. Although In the Smoke now only contains two teachers, the group has just started back from a summer break, and there are lots of exciting plans afoot.
Arrangers have come back with a couple of new songs each that they’re desperate to hear the group do, and ideas for dozens more that they probably won’t find time to write until next summer. New committee posts have already begun discussing exciting gig ideas and new forays into video and recording. And those in the group whose only responsibility is to show up and sing beautifully have been giving their voices some valuable beach and beer garden-based R&R.
As MD for this year (taking the reins back from a cappella veteran and mad – but in a very polite way – scientist Edward Brightman), I’m most looking forward to:
– Heading out to Bristol to perform, rehearse, and of course party with the formidable Original Sing (Voice Festival Community Champions 2013) – Developing our third a-ca-panto for a gig in November/December, having missed out on doing a Christmas gig last year – Experimenting with recording techniques that we haven’t utilised before – Making a bunch of music videos – Getting out and performing as much as possible, hopefully in collaboration with some Alzheimer’s Society projects we’ve had our eye on for a while – Bringing a few experimental arrangements to rehearsals that frighten, intrigue, and then eventually endear themselves to the rest of the group… *evil laugh*
We’ll be seeing ya,
*Cheeky plug: I’m actually not a teacher anymore – solo album out within a month – keep checking www.mdhmusic.com…

We’re delighted to announce that In the Smoke won the “Ward Swingle Award for Originality” at the Voice Festival Community Competition 2013, for our “Riverboat” set. This told the story of two star-crossed lovers held apart by warring tribes – and all in eight minutes! There is a video here.
Many congratulations to our friends at Original Sing who were crowned as VFUK Community Champions. Whisper it quietly, but watch this space for a joint gig…
We’ve got lots more to say about the “Big Weekend”, so check back soon for a more detailed look at the workshops and performances we saw.
We’re delighted to annouce that we’ll be appearing on the Voice Collection 2013 – a CD featuring the best of UK a cappella, produced by our friends at the Voice Festival! We will also be performing at the launch party at the London A Cappella Festival – starting at 8pm on Friday 25th January, at King’s Place near King’s Cross. Entry is FREE!
Christmas is coming, the geese are getting fat and your favourite London a cappella group, In the Smoke, is celebrating its fifth anniversary with a yuletide offering more smokin’ than an over-brandied festive pudding.
Get yourself in the festive mood on Saturday 15th December 2012 with a tale to warm your cockles as we whisk you away on a magic carpet to Arabia and the fair city of A-ca-rabah.
Yes, that’s right, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, we CAN show you the world. Oh yes we can. Get ready for ITS’s a ca-panto extravaganza: A-capp-Aladdin.
Carpet departs at 6pm from the Wheatsheaf Hall in Vauxhall – just enough time to complete that spot of Christmas shopping – returning at 8pm, just before that festive jumper party you have to go to.
There will be a cheap bar, nibbles and the odd mince pie – and you’re invited to stay as we keep the bar open for our own post-show party.
Tell your brother, your sister and your mamma too… It’s amazing, it’s awesome, #ITSacapanto.
